Analyst Programmer Job Outlook

With a dual role, a programmer analyst will analyze a company's information systems and software applications. They manipulate and analyze large data sets to answer business questions, then document the results and use them to design and write new and updated software products and programs for customers. Sometimes they provide ongoing support for these products, ensuring they meet customer standards.

Analyst programmers tend to work on a higher level than corporate programmers. The vast majority work in the design of computer systems or related service industries. This work can easily be done remotely and much of it has been outsourced to developing countries. Because of this, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field is expected to decline by 8% in the United States through 2024.

Duties and responsibilities of the programmer analyst

To program applications and software that meet business needs, a programmer analyst performs many different tasks. We analyze planning analysts' worklists to identify these primary tasks and responsibilities.

Manage the data

Analyst programmers work with large datasets that they manage and manipulate programmatically. They analyze these datasets and provide reports that describe a company's inefficiencies, inaccuracies and other problems and develop business solutions and market-driven insights.

Develop software

Collaborating with other programmers, the programmer analyst assists in the design, development, and implementation of new programs and applications. This may include in-house software development or software for commercial purposes. They also handle the testing and debugging of new software, providing advice to the programming team that solve technical problems.

Modify existing software

To ensure that programs continue to meet customer needs, the programming analyst must continuously monitor and update existing software. This can include minor software changes and improvements to completely redesign a program. As technology changes and customers evolve, your products need to change too.

Manage projects

Analyst programmers are responsible for overseeing many aspects of individual software projects. They review applications for new projects and recommend changes to existing programs. When evaluating new projects or improvement requests, they must determine the cost, planning, objectives and feasibility of the project and then monitor the project until it is completed. They often manage more than one project at a time.
