Electrical Engineering Technician Job Description

Electrical engineering technicians work on electrical control equipment and systems. They can help design and install electrical systems in buildings or cars, or they can test the functionality of electrical equipment.

Electrical engineering technicians often work under the direct supervision of an electrical engineer. Due to slower growth in manufacturing and an expected decline in federal government job opportunities, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 2% decline for electrical and electronics engineering jobs through 2024. Overall employment is expected to decline , engineering service companies should have a greater need for electrical engineering technicians looking to reduce costs by outsourcing these functions.

Duties and responsibilities of the electrical technician

The true purpose of an electrical engineering technician's job will depend on the job for which they are hired, but there are several main responsibilities that can apply to almost any electrical engineering technician position. A review of current jobs identified the following key responsibilities.

Install the systems

When an electrical engineering technician is asked to install electrical systems in a new or existing building or to assist in the creation of communication or navigation equipment, there is a lot of work to be done. Electrical engineering technicians will need to be able to design or assist in the layout design process, order parts and equipment needed for the project, then perform the installation themselves, or assist in the installation process. They must ensure that all circuits and parts are installed correctly and working as intended.

Evaluate systems

Electrical engineering technicians are also hired to perform product monitoring and system evaluations. This may require them to inspect a design plan, evaluate an electrical system and its components, or actively test electronic equipment and provide recommendations or repairs. Electrical engineering technicians must know how to test circuits using diagnostic tools, create solutions, and have the ability to complete basic repair work. Some electrical engineering technicians are also hired to perform preventative maintenance to ensure electrical systems are always up to date and safe.

Create documentation

Electrical engineering technicians must maintain detailed documentation on all systems and equipment on which they work. They may be tasked with creating a user manual, updating a maintenance log, or providing regular reports on the activities they have completed. The ability to create visual aids is often important to electrical engineering technicians.
