Tasks and responsibilities of the quality manager

Quality managers are responsible for overseeing manufacturing processes to ensure that the products manufactured meet the quality standards specific to their industry. You create and implement test systems for a specific product and then document the results. They also oversee a team of quality control inspectors. The manufacturing and engineering industries employ the most quality managers. Within these industries there are several niches in which products need to be manufactured. To be a successful quality manager, you need specialist knowledge of the products your employer makes. Although quality managers have their own office at a production site, they spend a lot of time at the production site inspecting or overseeing the inspection of finished products.

Tasks and responsibilities of the quality manager

Work with suppliers to define quality standards for raw materials

Before checking the finished products, the quality managers check the raw materials used in production. They visit supplier locations to ensure raw materials meet industry and government standards before their team's buyer places an order.

Monitoring the product development process

Quality managers work closely with the product development team to create a product development system that meets all industry and government quality assurance standards. They also oversee the production workshop to ensure that all stages of the production process are up to standards.

Hire, train, and manage members of the quality assurance team

This duty is the management aspect of this position. Quality managers are involved in the recruitment and integration of all members of the quality assurance team. You need to create and run a training program based on your employer's specific needs and standards. You also need to manage employee concerns and inspire them to do their best job.

Development of product inspection systems based on industry and government standards

This is the main responsibility of the quality manager. You should establish a repeatable procedure for inspecting products and the production process against industry-specific standards. You should then teach this system to your team and use it on all inspections.

Document and correct the cause of product defects

Product defects occur. It is the responsibility of the quality manager to document when these deficiencies occur so that a statistical analysis can be carried out to identify a plan of action to address these deficiencies.
