What is a Computer Operator? Skills needed


Computer operators are responsible for monitoring and managing the operation of computers and related devices within an organization. They ensure that computer systems and networks function effectively and efficiently by entering the appropriate commands and planning the use of computer terminals. Operators are also responsible for tracking, recording, and correcting system or program problems, or reporting device problems to the appropriate authorities within the organization.

Additional tasks may include responding to computer user problems over the phone, working with other employees to review the performance of new programs, and training employees in similar or assistant roles. Operators also determine which information technology and other materials to use and how to use them based on existing organizational rules, procedures or guidelines.

Skills needed
Computer operators must have a general technical understanding of computer systems and networks and how they work. You must be familiar with the monitoring, troubleshooting, and troubleshooting of the program and be prepared to work with application server, LAN, file, and database management and reporting software, among others.

Critical thinking and decision-making skills are important in this position, as problems that are easy to identify and difficult to solve can easily arise. The need to report problems to supervisors, train employees, and provide support to computer users in the company requires strong communication skills.

Career and salary prospects
According to the BLS, employment opportunities for computer operators are expected to fall by 23% or 11,800 jobs between 2016 and 2026. The increased use of automation plays an important role in reducing the career opportunities for this position.

The average annual salary for computer operators in May 2017 was $ 44,270, according to the BLS. According to Payscale.com, computer operators earned an average annual salary of $ 51,000 in March 2019.
