Job Duties and Tasks for Computer Operator


1) Enter the commands from the computer terminal and activate the controls on computers and peripherals to integrate and use the devices.

2) Monitor the system for device errors or performance errors.

3) Inform your computer supervisor or technician if the device is malfunctioning.

4) Respond to program error messages by finding and fixing problems or exiting the program.

5) Read the job setup instructions to determine the equipment to be used, order of use, material to be loaded, such as discs and paper, and control settings.

6) Manage spreadsheets and other types of software to load and edit data and generate reports.

7) Get the output of the program as needed, separate and sort it and send the data to specific users.

8) Load peripheral devices with materials selected for operational runs, or monitor peripheral device loading by peripheral device operators.

9) Answer calls to cause problems for computer users.

10) Monitor the operation of computer hardware systems, including coordinating and planning the use of terminals and computer networks to ensure efficient use.

11) Write down information such as computer uptime, problems, and actions taken.

12) Clean the device at the end of the operating run and check the program to determine the next assignment.

13) Enter the command on the keyboard to transfer the encoded data from the storage device to the magnetic tape and to support the labeling, classification, cataloging and maintenance of the tapes.

14) Monitoring and training of operators of peripheral devices and trainees of computer operators.

15) Help programmers and system analysts test and debug new programs.
