Service Technician is a broad title that covers skilled workers in various industries. Some service technicians work with cars, some with computers, and some with appliances. Regardless of their area of expertise, service technicians share the same role: providing services and repairs. Service technicians who go to a customer's home or business for repairs are sometimes called field service technicians
Duties and responsibilities of the service technician
The duties of a service technician vary greatly depending on the type of services provided; however, there are similar basic responsibilities common to all service technicians. A review of current job postings identified the following main activities.
Perform routine maintenance
All service technicians perform some types of routine maintenance. For automotive operators, this can be oil change or tire rotation. And for those who work on appliances, it could be to change filters or fuses. Regardless of the machinery a service technician performs, routine maintenance is one of the most common tasks assigned to him.
Install the products
Some service technicians are responsible for installing their own products. These can be various household appliances, security systems, or heating and cooling units. They are responsible for the installation, testing and therefore providing instructions to the customer on the correct use of the machinery. Excellent customer service skills are important as service technicians interact a lot with customers.
Make repairs
Service technicians also need to repair defective or broken products, which often involves replacing defective or worn parts. Service technicians should be able to use diagnostic tools to identify the problem and then fix the problem or order the parts needed for repair.
