Duties and responsibilities of the Survey Technician



Surveying technicians conduct land surveys to identify structures, property boundaries, and all natural and man-made features located on specific parcels of land. Survey companies, construction companies, and real estate agents hire survey technicians to work full-time on flexible shifts, usually on weekdays. Survey technicians generally work independently, reporting directly to the survey team supervisor. Surveying technicians work in the field and travel to various sites to perform their work, performing tasks in all seasons and weather conditions. They may need to travel at night to get to places.

Duties and responsibilities of the surveying engineer

The daily tasks of surveying technicians vary depending on the location and size of the properties they survey and the geographic and man-made features found on the site. However, these basic activities are commonly associated with this job:

Prepare the ground for detection

Surveyor technicians physically prepare the terrain for the survey by removing debris and brushes as needed. They also load and unload survey equipment from vehicles and place poles and other terrain markers at survey points.

Take photos

Topographic technicians photograph the terrain features.

Measure distances

Survey engineers measure distances between specific survey points and record this data so that it can be entered into survey software programs.

Maintenance of equipment and vehicles

Inspection technicians clean and maintain equipment to ensure that it remains in good working order. This includes the replacement of parts, tools, and equipment as needed. They also keep your personal vehicle in good working order and well supplied with gas and / or electricity.
